Zhao,Yingshun: The clumsy performance of autocratic CCP
赵英顺(zhao,Yingshun)
The performance of Chinese President Hu,Jintao visited U.S. disappointed people even those supporting CCP, he was stiff and awkward, expressionless, no demeanor of a country leader, especially when compared to President Obama who was very confident in talking, the media image had a great deal of difference between the two.
For instance at the press conference, probably because of translation, President Hu seemed didn’t hear the first question of American reporter (regarding human rights), when the second American reporter reinstated the question and put forward a awkward question (regarding several Congressmen who refused to attend the welcome ceremony), President Hu apparently thought American reporters were not friendly and was unhappy ( from his tone, behaviors, and facial expression), he refused to answer the second question expect repeated the first answer, which showed narrow mind and lack of tolerance, and lost the chance to explain the stance to Americans. Some netizens commented that President Hu was too nervous at the conference, and some even thought his behaviors were not good than a student.
Since the establishment of Soviet Union, the second and third generations of leaders in socialist countries have the same pattern on public occasions, like mysterious, unapproachable, stiff and awkward, no laugh, expressionless, and humorless. The British throne Prince Charles recalled the taking over ceremony of regression of Hong Kong, and said President Jiang,Zemin and lower officials behaved like old wax figures, and “The New York Times” viewed President Hu as a machine.
Politics of royal chamber is the main reason of such phenomenon. Because the future of officials is determined by superiors, and has no relation with common people, the only thing officials need to do is to coddle superiors, do everything as they are told, willing to be tamed, they also have to figure out superiors’ minds, inquire about inside information, bribes and so on. They don’t need to please superiors and contact common people, attend public debates, show off their eloquence, and win over votes.
Politics of royal chamber has intense inside power struggles, and officials have to deliberate in their speech and action, in case they are tripped up and jeopardize their future, or even loss of position. In recent years, CCP often has local power struggles, and come to the point of mortal combat, like deputies kill principals. Therefore, officials speak very cautious in public, don’t want to speak one more word expect go by the book, especially not willing to receive foreign reporters in case they have mistakes and have something on them. President Hu first agreed to hold press conference reluctantly, and later behaved excessive nervousness.
During his visit in the U.S., American Congressman once claimed him as dictator, though it lacked manners, it reflected the fact. His expression when visited the U.S. only proved the political royal chamber lost touch with times, the current system of CCP extremely lack innovation and motivation, and it’s time to carry out drastic reforms.
