Police stand guard in front of the Shanxi Provincial Communist Party office building after explosions in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, Nov. 6, 2013.

Chinese authorities say they have arrested a man suspected of setting off a series of explosions outside Communist Party offices in northern China that killed one person and wounded eight others.

Officials in Shanxi province said 41-year-old ex-convict Feng Zhijun was captured on Friday in the provincial capital of Taiyuan, where the incident occurred, and confessed to the attack.

Authorities said police found homemade bombs and bomb-making materials in Feng's home. Police also said that Feng had previoulsy served nine years in prison for theft.

No motive was given for the attack.

The incident came just over a week after a deadly car crash and explosion in Tiananmen Square that Beijing has blamed on Muslim separatists.

In that incident, officials say three people from Xinjiang ran a car into a group of tourists and set their vehicle on fire. All three people inside the vehicle and two tourists died. Dozens were wounded.

Xinjiang is home to the mostly Muslim Uighur ethnic group, some of whom complain of religious and cultural persecution at the hands of the government.
