China tells US Navy to back off
China National News
Thursday 12th March, 2009

The US Navy has been told by China's Defence Ministry to end surveillance missions off the China’s southern coast.

Earlier in the week, it was reported by the US that three Chinese government ships and two Chinese-flagged trawlers confronted an American research vessel.

The Chinese government has stated its side was only carrying out routine enforcement measures within its sea boundaries, saying the US ship
was operating illegally inside China's exclusive economic zone.

The US says that Navy mapping ship USNS Impeccable was operating legally when it was harassed by the Chinese about 75 miles off China's southern island province of Hainan.

The Impeccable is designed to seek out threats such as submarines, mines and torpedoes.

In a sharp statement, the Chinese said: 'We demand the United States respect our legal interests and security concerns, and take effective measures to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.'

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton have met in a private meeting to discuss the confrontation.
