Afghan officials say seven soldiers were killed in a roadside bombing in the country's south.

Officials say the blast occurred Wednesday in Khost Province. No further details were released.

In other violence, an Afghan journalist who spent nearly a year in U.S. military detention was shot and killed in the southern city of Kandahar.

Witnesses say Jawed Ahmad was driving in Kandahar when unidentified men in another vehicle pulled up alongside his car and opened fire.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Ahmad worked as a "fixer" (organizer) and cameraman for several Canadian news organizations.

He was released in September after being held in U.S. military custody for about 11 months at Bagram air base, near Kabul. His case had sparked criticism from press freedom and human rights groups.

The U.S. military had declared him an "unlawful enemy combatant," but later released him abruptly without explanation.

The media group Committee to Protect Journalists said it hoped the killers will be found, unlike in the cases of other recent journalists' deaths.

The media advocacy group also asked Afghan President Hamid Karzai Tuesday to pardon a journalist who is serving a 20-year prison term. CPJ Director Joel Simon wrote a letter to Mr. Karzai asking him to confirm details of the case against Perwiz Kambakhsh.

Security forces detained Kambakhsh in late 2007 for allegedly distributing an essay about women's rights in Islam. Details of the case have not been made public.

The New York-based group says Kambakhsh's lawyer confirmed Tuesday that Afghanistan's supreme court has upheld the prison sentence. The group claims Kambakhsh has received death threats from prison inmates.

Kambakhsh was originally sentenced to death.
