U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton meets Thursday with the foreign ministers of Afghanistan and Pakistan to discuss new U.S. strategies in the region.

The formal meeting follows a dinner Wednesday with Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Afghan Foreign Minister Rangeen Dadfar Spanta.

Richard Holbrooke, a special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, will participate in Thursday's talks.

On Wednesday, Pakistan's foreign minister said Islamabad wants the United States to rethink its use of drones to attack militant targets on Pakistani soil. Qureshi said he wanted the drones transferred to Pakistani control - because Pakistan is in a better position to determine how to use the technology and achieve the objective without alienating people.

Meanwhile, U.S. Senator John McCain has called for a major change in U.S. strategy in Afghanistan.

McCain said Washington and its allies should help the Afghan army increase its ranks. He proposed increasing U.S. non-military assistance to Afghanistan and expanding U.S. efforts to help Kabul fight corruption and crack down on the illicit drug trade.

On Thursday, the Senate Armed Services Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing on strategic options for Afghanistan and Pakistan.
