Chinese Oil Workers Return to China After Abduction in Ethiopia

   By VOA News

   02 May 2007

Chinese state media say seven Chinese oil workers who were abducted by rebels in Ethiopia last week have arrived in Beijing on their way home.

The Xinhua news agency says the oil workers landed at Beijing's airport Wednesday afternoon on a flight from Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa.

Rebels from the Ogaden National Liberation Front handed over the seven Chinese to the International Committee of the Red Cross on Sunday.

The rebels attacked a Chinese-run oil field in Ethiopia's eastern Ogaden region April 24, killing nine Chinese and 65 Ethiopians.  The bodies of the nine Chinese were flown to central China's Henan province Monday.

The Ogaden rebels have been fighting for regional independence for more than two decades.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
