Ding, Hong:Opening the Internet Threatens Autocracy
                                                Date: 11/21/2006 11:21:2006

Internet, as a fast and convenient information media, has become a severe challenge to the Chinese authority. The Chinese government did not know how to react to the rapid internet growth at the beginning one or two years, but soon they realized that they can find out ways to deal with it. In recent years, the government invests a great amount of money, with the help of foreign companies’ modern techniques; they have built up an unprecedented powerful internet control and supervision system. Using “secret police” system to control information characterizes China’s internet control with political terror and political violence.
Political freedom is the system principle commonly adopted most countries in the world. Chinese government holds political freedom and information freedom as “crimes”. Therefore, they have every reason to despise such basic principles of the human society as freedom,  democracy,  and  human rights. Democracy, freedom, human rights and rule by law are all topics forbidden in China. The Chinese government thinks that controls of internet plays a vital role in the safety of the government. It does not matter a lot if internet control affects economic growth which does not threatens government control. If CCP loses government control, developing China’s economy then becomes meaningless to CCP.
