Iraq's Interior Minister Jawad al-Bolani says he is preparing major changes in the ministry's leadership in an effort to quell sectarian divisions.
Bolani told Western reporters in Baghdad that 3,000 ministry employees have been fired recently, including some for corruption. He said several cases involve possible prosecution.
Mr. Bolani also criticized mostly Shi'ite Muslim militias in the country. He said he does not approve of their existence.
Militias are blamed for thousands of killings in Iraq. The violence has inflamed tensions between the Sunni Arab and Shi'ite communities. Critics say that some militias have been operating within the Interior Ministry and its police force.
Meanwhile, two car bombs exploded Saturday in the Iraqi capital, wounding at least two people. Police also said gunmen killed a teacher in the southern city of Diwaniyah.
