    Ban Ki-Moon

The United Nations General Assembly has formally elected South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-Moon as the world body's Secretary General.
He will succeed outgoing U.N. leader Kofi Annan on January 1.
Ban is expected to play a keyrole in efforts to resolve international conflicts, including the North Korean nuclear dispute
The seasoned diplomat became South Korea's foreign minister in 2004, and played a leading role in reaching an agreement last year between North Korea and members of the six-party talks to halt Pyongyang's nuclear development program. The talks have since stalled, but Ban continues to call on North Korea to return to discussions.
Ban will become the first South Korean to take the much-coveted post. He will be the second Asian, after U Thant of Burma, who served from 1961 to 1971.
