President Bush and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan have promised to continue their efforts to fight terrorism and extremism.

The two leaders spoke to reporters after meeting at the White House Monday, but did not take any questions.

Before the talks, Turkey＇s Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said his country expected "serious cooperation" from the United States and Iraq in countering Turkey＇s Kurdish rebels.

In a "Newsweek" magazine interview, Gul said leaders of the Kurdistan Workers Party have moved from Syria to northern Iraq, and that militants are taking Iraqi army weapons and explosives and using them in Turkey.

The Turkish foreign minister says Ankara might take unilateral action if its friends do not help with the situation.

Prime Minister Erdogan said he and Mr. Bush also discussed the situation in the Middle East and what role Turkey can play in the region.

The Turkish leader said they also talked about U.S. support for Turkey＇s bid to join the European Union.

Also on the agenda was the political situation in Cyprus, with Mr. Erdogan saying he appreciated what he called Mr. Bush＇s "sensitivities" on the issue of the politically divided island.
