Iraqi bystanders are seen at site where at least 35 people were killed on August 10, 2006 by a suicide bomber in a market in Najaf near Shiite Islam's holiest shrine, the Imam Ali mausoleum

Iraqi authorities say a suicide bomber killed at least 35 people and wounded more than 120 others in an attack near a Shi'ite Muslim shrine in the southern city of Najaf.

Police say the bomber blew himself up Thursday after being stopped at a security checkpoint near the Imam Ali Shrine, one of the most sacred shrines of Shi'ite Islam.

The offices of Iraq's top Shi'ite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, are also located near the shrine.

In a statement, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki blamed the attack on Sunni extremists ("Takfiris") and supporters of ousted leader Saddam Hussein.

Najaf is a major destination for Shi'ite pilgrims and has been the scene of several sectarian attacks in past years.

In other violence, a bomb blast killed six people at a restaurant in Baghdad.

On Wednesday, the U.S. military announced the capture of four Iraqi men in connection with the kidnapping of American reporter Jill Carroll. Kidnappers held Carroll for 82 days before freeing her in March.

U.S. Major General William Caldwell said the men were arrested in the Sunni Arab-dominated Anbar province.  He said they were picked up in a series of raids after a military officer noticed a house west of Fallujah that Carroll had described.

In New York Thursday, the U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to extend its mission in Iraq for another year. The U.N. says it has about 400 personnel in Iraq to help the country in the face of formidable political, security and economic challenges.
