Explosions in Baghdad Kill 31, Iraqi PM Ends US Visit

Iraqi police say explosions in central Baghdad have killed 31 people and wounded more than 115 others.
Police say a car bomb and mortar fire caused the blasts Thursday in a religiously mixed commercial district (Karrada).
The district is under the control of a major Shi＇ite party. It was considered one of the few relatively safe areas of the Iraqi capital gripped by a bloody sectarian conflict.
In other violence, Georgian officials say gunmen in Iraq wounded six Georgian soldiers, two of them seriously.

The violence occurred as Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki ended a visit to Washington, where he and President Bush announced plans to increase the number of American troops in Baghdad to curb rising violence.
During a visit to an American military base near Washington, Mr. Maliki thanked U.S. troops and their families for their sacrifice in Iraq, while Mr. Bush said that seeing democracy succeed there is in America＇s interest.
