Sun, Zhude: China Is About to Enter a New Era

孙祝德(Sun, Zhude)
Since its founding, the CCP has gone through three distinct eras.
The first was the era of former Chairman Mao Zedong, a period rife with political struggle and social turmoil. It began with the suppression of "landlords, rich peasants, counter-revolutionaries, bad elements, and rightists," followed by brutal internal power struggles and ruthless intra-Party purges—conflicts that persisted until the nation was impoverished and its economy teetered on the brink of collapse. The second period was that of Deng Xiaoping. While economic development was encouraged, the political autocracy of the Party-state was strictly maintained. Long-suppressed productive forces were unleashed, and the vast majority of Chinese people escaped poverty and achieved prosperity; however, the lack of democracy and the rule of law allowed corrupt officials to run rampant, created a sharp divide between the rich and the poor, and caused social tensions to deteriorate rapidly.
The third period is the current era of Xi Jinping. To consolidate his regime, he has emulated the Mao Zedong era by further centralizing power, tightening control over the media and the internet, and imposing harsh regulations on civil society and the private sector. This has led to greater social instability, creating a situation where political upheaval could occur at any moment; as he eventually exits the stage of history, an era of reform will surely follow.
