Sun, Zhude: The Path to Democratization in Mainland China

Following World War II, the United Nations was established, and the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights were issued; as people＇s political consciousness awakened, the world entered an era of democracy and human rights.
Democratic movements surged across nations; many ancient authoritarian states underwent democratic transitions, giving rise to a new wave of democratic countries. A common pattern of democratic transition involves a sudden social event that triggers a chain reaction across various social strata, igniting long-simmering tensions. This garners sympathy and support from the grassroots, evolves into a massive social movement, and ultimately overthrows the authoritarian regime to establish a democratically elected government—examples include the Philippines, Indonesia, and the recent "Jasmine Revolution" in the Middle East.
However, the situation in mainland China is different; the rule of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is exceptionally harsh and ruthless, and the Party＇s organizational structure is omnipresent, making the emergence of a nationwide social movement highly unlikely.
China＇s path to democratization may follow a different model—a top-down approach—where the emergence of enlightened leadership gradually drives the country＇s democratization, similar to the transitions seen in the Soviet Union, South Korea, and South Africa.
I believe that mainland China, too, will achieve democracy.
