Wang ,Ting: Happiness Without Dignity Is Illusory Happiness

王婷(Wang, Ting)
In recent years, mainland China has experienced rapid economic growth. Many citizens feel prosperous and materially well-off, enjoying the ability to travel abroad with their families and shop for goods around the world.
It appears as though a "moderately prosperous society" has arrived, that China has achieved national rejuvenation, and that the Chinese people are the happiest in the world.
However, mainland citizens—who have never experienced democracy or human rights—may not realize that a happy life entails not only material wealth but also spiritual freedom.
A normal life should include a baseline of dignity and respect, rather than forcing people to live in a servile manner under the tyranny of corrupt officials.
Although the material standard of living for the people of mainland China has improved, the CCP government denies them the freedom of expression, keeps them in the dark about the inner workings of corruption, and excludes them from participating in state governance.
Despite these improvements in living standards, the deprivation of freedom and democracy—and the total absence of dignity—demonstrate that happiness without dignity is merely an illusion.
