Wang, Ting: Chinese Intellectuals Are the Hope for a Democratic China

In recent years, under harsh political repression, intellectuals in mainland China have become polarized.
The majority have chosen to remain within the system: some retreat to their studies to focus on history, traditional Chinese learning, and folklore; others attach themselves to power, becoming "court scribes" who abet tyranny; still others pursue power and wealth, turning into ostentatious academic "barons" and philistines.
However, a minority of intellectuals—including certain lawyers, journalists, and professors—have kept their consciences alive. Undeterred by severe crackdowns, they continue to resist, speak out for justice, and advocate for the ordinary people of mainland China. They are willing to face imprisonment rather than abandon their ideals, and would rather endure hunger, cold, and separation from their families than kneel and grovel to the authorities for handouts—thereby demonstrating the unyielding integrity of Chinese intellectuals. A nation moves forward only when a vanguard of progressive individuals strives ceaselessly; these intellectuals represent the hope of the Chinese nation.
With such dedicated, righteous people tirelessly striving for China＇s democratization, the realization of a democratic China remains a hopeful prospect.
