Wang Ting: CCP "50-Cent Army" Members Pose as Overseas Chinese

王婷(Wang, Ting)
The CCP's overseas online army—known as the "50-Cent Army" (or *wumao*)—consists of individuals paid by the CCP authorities to operate online. Using pseudonyms and posing as independent private citizens, they publish comments supporting the CCP, refute criticisms leveled against the Party, and burnish the regime's image, thereby creating a false impression that the CCP enjoys the wholehearted support of the people.
In the past, the rhetoric of these online "50-Cent" operatives was crude and easily exposed. However, a new trend has recently emerged: many CCP "50-cent army" members are registering under English names and pretending to reside in the U.S. or be overseas Chinese. They distort facts and invert right and wrong regarding issues concerning China and international affairs, all while lauding the CCP system and disparaging Western democracies.
The CCP instigates these operatives to adopt aliases with the aim of misleading uninformed netizens and altering the image of the CCP's authoritarian dictatorship.
Yet, this ploy is easily seen through; because they employ the CCP's propaganda rhetoric and official terminology, it is immediately apparent that they are operatives from mainland China. Consequently, this tactic only provokes greater public resentment and further intensifies the quest for the truth and the aspiration for a better life.
