US Soldier Freed by Taliban in Afghanistan

U.S. officials say the Taliban has freed the only U.S. soldier held prisoner in Afghanistan after he spent nearly five years in captivity.

The officials say the Taliban agreed to turn over Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl to the U.S. in exchange for the release of five detainees from the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The exchange follows U.S.-Taliban negotiations mediated by the government of Qatar.

Officials say the 28-year-old Bergdahl is in good condition and is currently under the care of the U.S. military.

Bergdahl, of the U.S. state of Idaho, had been held by the Taliban since June 30, 2009.

President Barack Obama broke the news of Bergdahl＇s release Saturday, calling the soldier＇s recovery "a reminder of America’s unwavering commitment to leave no man or woman in uniform behind on the battlefield."

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel says the U.S. government "never forgot Sergeant Bergdahl, nor did we stop working to bring him back."
