A fallen tree blocks one lane of traffic on 13th Street NW in the Logan Circle neighborhood of Washington, Saturday, June 30, 2012.

A wave of violent storms has hit the U.S. capital area, plunging 1.5 million homes and businesses into darkness with the loss of electricity.

The fierce weather late Friday night uprooted trees and blew off some roofs.  Broken tree branches littered the streets in Washington and surrounding suburban neighbors in Maryland and Virginia.  Many homes were damaged by fallen trees.

Officials say at least two deaths were reported in Northern Virginia - the result of fallen trees.

Winds reached nearly 130 kilometers per hour, following a day of record breaking temperatures that reached 40 degrees ( Celsius) in Washington.  Temperatures fell to 23 degrees immediately after the storm, but are expected to heat up again for more sweltering weather Saturday.

The storms had swept across much of the north-central U.S. during the afternoon and early evening, tipping over large trucks on highways.
