Grieve For the Death of Mr. Lizhi Fang, a World-Renowned Pro-Democracy Forerunner

Mr. Lizhi Fang, a world-renowned pro-democracy forerunner, and an astrophysicist, passed away in Arizona State of America in the morning of April 6, 2012, at the age of 76. At 6:00pm of April 13, 2012, China Democracy Party, the editorial department of “China Democracy Journal”, and “China Democracy Forum” jointly held an activity of “deeply mourning Mr. Lizhi Fang, a world-renowned pro-democracy forerunner” in front of Flushing Library of New York. Mr. Gang Liu, a student leader of “June Forth Movement”, and Mr. Jun Wang, the chairman of China Democracy Party as well as the proprietor of “China Democracy Journal”, hosted the memorial together, and made funeral orations during the activity. Journalists of some mainstream media like “World Journal”, and some residents of the New York community attended the memorial. On the April 9 of 2012, the American government deeply lamented the death of Mr. Lizhi Fang. It was said by The U.S. Department of State that Mr. Lizhi Fang is a pioneer of China’s human rights and democratic reform. Nuland, the spokeswoman of the Department of State, delivered a eulogy on 9th: “We all sorrow over the news about the death of Mr. Lizhi Fang, who is an astrophysicist as well as a Chinese pro-democracy activist. He is a pioneer of China’s human rights and democratic reform, and we express our heartfelt condolences to his family”.
Mr. Lizhi Fang’s ancestral home is Hangzhou, Zhejiang, and he grew up in Beijing. He entered primary school at the age of four, and was a smart and studious boy. When he was sixteen years old, he began to study in the Beijing University. Afterwards he became a nationally known astrophysicist, and was selected as a commissioner of the department of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the vice-president of China Science and Technology University, and the director of the Center for Astrophysics of China Science and Technology University.
In 1980s, Mr. Lizhi Fang disseminated the idea of democracy and freedom in China, and openly challenged China Communist Party’s one-party dictatorship. His speech and political views were favored by countless Chinese people, and were widely spread among the young students and the intelligentsia. After the “Student Movement” took place in 1986, Mr. Lizhi Fang set a good example with his own conduct, and took the lead in supporting democratic appeals from the young students. It was Lizhi Fang, Binyan Liu, and Ruowang Wang that became the three leaders to support the students’ democratic movements. Xiaoping Deng, the potentate of the China communist government, could not tolerate Mr. Lizhi Fang’s speech and political views. Therefore, in 1987, during the movement of “oppose to bourgeois liberalization” held by the China communist government, Mr. Lizhi Fang was named by Xiaoping Deng, and was expelled from China Communist Party. In 1989 when the Tiananmen Square Movement occurred, Mr. Lizhi Fang wrote an open letter to Xiaoping Deng, the chairman of the Central Military Commission of China Communist Party, to demand the release of democratic activists. Also, he criticized the political system of the China communist government, and publicly supported the student movements. After the June Forth Massacre, both Mr. Lizhi Fang and his wife named Ms. Shuxian Li, a pro-democracy activist, were wanted by the China communist government. Mr. Lizhi Fang and his wife were compelled to come to the United States Consulate in China for seeking refuge. After the senior officials of the American government stepped in and interfered, Mr. Lizhi Fang and his wife flied to England by an American military aircraft, and after half a year they reached America, and then he taught in University of Arizona.

At the memorial, Mr. Gang Liu, a student of Mr. Lizhi Fang, a student leader of “June Forth Movement”, and a pro-democracy activist, gave a brief introduction about Mr. Lizhi Fang’s life, put a premium on Mr. Lizhi Fang’s contribution to China’s democratic movements, and put forward five proposals.
1. He called on former students of China Science and Technology University to donate money, to erect a statue of Mr. Lizhi Fang in the campus of China Science and Technology University in memory of the outstanding vice-president.
2. He appealed former students of China Science and Technology University for donations, and a monument set up in the Beijing University, so as to honor the memory of the famous former student Mr. Lizhi Fang.
3. He called on Beijing Observatory to name a nova or a double star after Mr. Lizhi Fang. The observatory could name a star “Fang-Li Star”, for a permanent memorial to Mr. Lizhi Fang, a remarkable Chinese astrophysicist.
4. He advised the Chinese Academy of Sciences to confer an honorary academician or academic commissioner on Mr. Lizhi Fang, so as for the memory of the ever youngest academician. Also, it will rinse a disgrace from dismissing Mr. Lizhi Fang.
5. Before Mr. Lizhi Fang lived in exile in America, he used to live in Room No.1101-1102 of Building 916, Baofu Temple, Haidian District of Beijing. Mr. Gang Liu advised Beijing to create a Lizhi Fang Memorial from the apartment. Thus, the Chinese people have a chance to cherish the memory of Mr. Lizhi Fang’s greatness, and Beijing will glory in Mr. Lizhi Fang who is a prominent citizen.
Mr. Jun Wang, the chairman of China Democracy Party as well as the proprietor of “China Democracy Journal”, said that when Mr. Lizhi Fang acted as the vice-president of China Science and Technology University in 1987, he openly advocated liberalization of thought, and his view evoked a strong and positive response in the young students and the intelligentsia, what’s more, he made a national name for himself in his speech. However, Xiaoping Deng, the chairman of the Central Military Commission of China Communist Party, thought that Lizhi Fang, Binyan Liu, and Ruowang Wang “opposed the party’s leadership and socialism, and preached 'wholesale westernization'” . Therefore, Lizhi Fang became one of the three well-known Party members who were expelled from China Communist Party. The other two were Mr. Binyan Liu, the vice-chairman of Chinese Writers Association, a journalist of “People Daily”, as well as a writer, and Mr. Ruowang Wang, a councilman of Chinese Writers Association.
Mr. Jun Wang also said that Mr. Lizhi Fang was “a great warrior who fought for human rights”. Although in Mr. Lizhi Fang’s lifetime, he did not see a dawn of democracy appears in China, and did not see the realization of his idea——“democratization of politics and liberalization of economy” in China, we will inherit Mr. Lizhi Fang’s dream, and we will exert ourselves to fight and strive for the dream. Mr. Jun Wang said, “Today, we mourn Mr. Lizhi Fang’s death in New York of America, and we also commemorate “June Forth Incident”. It can be said that there would be no Tiananmen Square Democratic Movement without Mr. Lizhi Fang. We remember “June Forth incident” and the victims who died for idea. We soothed the unknown and unsung disabled who are living on this land, and we encourage all dedicators who are continuing fighting for the undertaking of China’s democracy. We believe that a democratic and freedom China will come soon”.
May Mr. Lizhi Fang rest in peace. We will never forget his speech and assertion, and we will forever remember you.
