Yang, Zhi: The Chinese government must allow freedom of press and speech

In recent years, there are journalists, dissidents, human rights activists and China Democracy Party member who have been jailed because they published articles online in China. They are all regular Chinese people. Why would this happen? Because there is a lack of speech freedom in China; the Chinese government doesn’t allow people to express freely, let alone criticizing the government.
Therefore, the Chinese government strictly controls the press. This government talks about the openness and freedom of press in China, in fact, the Chinese government didn’t show any sincerity of improving press freedom. On one hand, it is said that foreign press journalists are allowed to interview in China; on the other hand, strict regulations have been set on limiting foreign press.
To allow freedom of press and speech in China might have some negative impact, however it is harmful for the government to limit the freedom of speech and press in the long run. It is the information era now. The Chinese government should use the advanced internet to allow freedom of press and speech, so that people have full right of knowledge and expression, people’s voice can be heard, and real freedom of press and speech can be realized.
