——An effective management system for food safety in China must be established
On June 7, 2011, 11AM, more than 200 China Democracy Party members went to protest in front of the Chinese Consulate in NY and strongly request the Chinese Communist government to safeguard food safety and ask to establish effective management system for food safety. Wang, Jun, China Democracy Party Chairman and China Democracy Journal Proprietor attended and spoke at the gathering.
The 25th item of Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 stated that: everybody has the right to enjoy the standard life quality of health and welfare for him/her and the relatives, including food, clothes…and necessary social services…..has the right to be protected. It stated that food safety not only involves the right of life and health, but also involves the right to know and environmental rights.
There is a lack of effective management system of food safety, and there are several other food safety issues after melamine milk power issue. In February, 2011, deadly leather milk powder was discovered in dairy products. Unscrupulous traders hydrolyzed leather waste and added the powder products into milk powder to increase the protein content for higher profit. The hydrolyzed protein brought chemicals such as potassium chromate and sodium chromate into dairy products and poisoned dairy product eaters and caused several kids death. In mid-May, Liu, Ming, from Dalvcun, Danyang, Jiangsu created great news of “modern agricultural technology”. This farmer applied expanding sweetener fertilizer on watermelons and made the watermelons of 47 sheds expand and explode. Chinese who often ate this kind of fertilizer-containing food were concerned. They have become the victims of China’s agriculture’s overdependence on technical methods. Their misery roots from no choice of food and they have to eat the food. The horrifying manufacturing of food has surprised the world again.
The food poisonous accidents almost happen every day. Vegetables, fruits and other side products from certain areas contain pesticides much more than the standard level; food poisoning happens from time to time. Chinese local government and government officials could always explain food poisoning. Official media chooses the way of reports and the wordings to avoid responsibility.
After 2008 Beijing Olympics, press exposed the poisonous milk powder from the brand “Sanlu”. 23 brands of dairy products were found containing excessive melamine, however, Sanlu was the the only corporation punished; all the other milk powder manufacturers were not punished. This solution has indirectly helped with the illegal speculation and planted potential threats to people’s health and life. In the past few years, food poisoning accidents have continuously happened. As of now, China’s food safety has become social threat. We strongly request the government to show sincerity on safeguarding food safety.

China Democracy Party Chairman, China Democracy Journal Proprietor, Wang, Jun stated at the gathering that the Chinese have a saying that hunger breeds discontent; people wish that food safety could be guarded and are more concerned about food safety. If the food safety can’t be guaranteed, the issue of health can’t be guarded. There is doggerel: fear of hormones when eating animals, fear of poisons when eating plants, fear of pigments when drinking; people have no idea what could be eaten. As of today, people don’t know what can be eaten and what can’t be. Green vegetables look fresh but can’t be eaten in the fear of pesticide residues.
Wang, Jun stated that the food safety issue is still upsetting. There are inevitable factors behind every food safety accident; the Chinese government should reinforce the legislation and execution of food safety, complete monitoring mechanism and punish illegal merchants in the food manufacturing industry. This affects the health and life of every Chinese. The contemporary management system of food safety in America has developed for years, although the system is broad and comprehensive, there are strict legal management system for food safety; food industry regulates themselves according to food safety rules. These factors safeguards the food safety in American market; China should learn from the food safety regulations of America and reinforce the legislation and execution of food safety so that the Chinese could have worry-free food.
