U.S. President Barack Obama says it is critical Israeli and Palestinian leaders work together to resolve issues and restart stalled peace talks in the region.

Mr. Obama spoke in New York Tuesday after hosting a joint meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Mr. Obama said despite all of the history, and mistrust between the two sides, they must find a way to move forward.

At the start of the talks, Mr. Obama coaxed the two leaders into a handshake and stood back as they gripped hands.

Mr. Obama said there has been progress toward laying a foundation for peace talks to resume, but there is more work to be done.

He said U.S. top Mideast negotiator, George Mitchell, will meet with Israeli and Palestinian officials again next week.

President Obama also said he has asked U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to report back to him next month on the status of the talks.

Before the meeting Tuesday, Mr. Obama held separate talks with Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Abbas.

All sides had been careful not to raise hopes about reaching a breakthrough during the talks, especially after the United States was unable to persuade Israeli leaders to agree to stop building Jewish settlements on occupied territory.

Palestinian leaders say building more Jewish homes on land Israel captured in the 1967 Arab-Israeli War threatens their efforts to create a viable state and stalls peace efforts.

Israel says some construction is necessary to accommodate the natural growth of Jewish families living in occupied East Jerusalem.
