Knock-on disruption is expected for hours after airports reopen

Officials have lifted flight restrictions at Heathrow, Gatwick and other airports after the volcanic ash cloud that closed UK airspace moved on.

Shetland and Orkney airports remain closed after a weekend of disruption. City of Derry airport is also affected.

The industry has warned that knock-on disruption to passenger flights could last for some hours.

British Airways boss Willie Walsh called the latest restrictions "a gross overreaction to a very minor risk".

Transport Secretary Phillip Hammond told the BBC work was ongoing to raise the threshold level at which volcanic ash forced a flight ban.

Airport operator BAA, which runs six UK airports including Heathrow and Stansted, said: "It is likely that some delays and cancellations will go on throughout the day and we continue to advise passengers to check the status of their flights with airlines."

Weather forecasters said the ash cloud, which led to a flight ban over much of the UK last weekend, is now being blown away.

Across the country:

• There are no longer any restrictions at airports in Northern Ireland , however City of Derry airport has warned that flights remain cancelled until 1900 BST. Flights in and out of Dublin, in the Irish Republic, resumed at noon.

• In Scotland the no-fly zone remains in place in the Orkney and Shetland Islands between 1300 and 1900 BST. Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Prestwick and Inverness airports have reopened. However, all services to and from Sumburgh and Kirkwall have been cancelled for the remainder of the day.
